This Week on Trading Paints: May 23, 2025

Welcome to This Week on Trading Paints, the pulse on what’s happening in the Trading Paints world while you’re checking out iRacing’s latest development blog.

🚘 Gen 4 Cup cars will have two different templates

In iRacing’s latest development update shared Monday, Senior Vice President and Executive Producer Greg Hill revealed an important detail about how paints will work for the much-anticipated NASCAR 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo and 2003 Ford Taurus Gen 4 Cup cars.

Each car package will include two distinct car bodies: Stockcar and Speedway Stockcar. During this era of Cup racing, the car bodies were dramatically different in shape, and this presented a new challenge for our architecture. While we already have many cars with track-specific variants, the 2003 variants are so unique that we could not use a singular paint template and had to split each variant into its own unique template.

So, painters, prepare yourselves: in terms of paints, this means you’ll need two separate versions of your car on two different templates depending on track type due to differences in the cars’ body styles. Your paint for Daytona will differ from the one you drive at Bristol.

Another bit of related good news from the development blog: the iRacing UI paint preview will soon support toggling between body styles — no more need to load a sim session at a particular track.

It’s Indy 500 weekend, and Community Manager Patrick selected this fictional concept from Tyler Tucker that’s a mashup of the McLaren Formula 1 team’s Chrome livery (2024 United States Grand Prix) as Pato O’Ward’s IndyCar ride.
