🤖 A closing note on AI-generated images on Showroom listings
The Trading Paints community takes great pride in showcasing creativity in livery design from painters and sim photographers from all over the world. We’re quickly approaching a million active paint listings in the Showroom, as part of over 20,000,000 custom paints assigned by iRacing members on Trading Paints.
Beyond the numbers, the quality of content shared by the community is nothing short of incredible, and we’re awed by some of the work we see. We’re thrilled that painters have built names for themselves and earned paid real-world opportunities based on what they’re shared with the world through the Showroom, and we find the stories you share with us inspirational.
We work hard to maintain the integrity of the Showroom and respect our wonderful community of designers as the painting community continues to grow and the state of technology changes.
Our hardworking Trading Paints Community team reviews and flags Showroom paints that don’t contain iRacing screenshots, including those that use images generated or modified by AI tools. This is vitally important so that when iRacing members browse the Showroom (or the average racing fan who stumbles in from a search!), they’re seeing accurate and original work created from members of the community, and that the images on the screen represent exactly what an artist has created and how it’ll be seen in iRacing. If the Showroom is a beautiful and colorful garden planted with original and thoughtful creations, our job is to weed it.
As a reminder, racers don’t want to see AI-generated images in the Showroom, and we don’t see AI images as a part of the Trading Paints community’s DNA. Instead, it’s important that images on a Showroom listing present how the custom paint looks in iRacing, through screenshots from either the iRacing sim or built-in 3D car viewer.
Of course, touching up and editing screenshots is welcome and encouraged and it’s a normal part of the photography process. But dropping a picture into an AI tool to ask it to “enhance” it with a background or scene is not helpful or productive — it’s no longer an iRacing screenshot at that point. (Yes, it’s a cliché term, but that’s AI slop. We can tell and anybody viewing it can tell.)
Our team, with the help of community members who report it (thank you!), will continue to flag and penalize Showroom listings that contain images that are the result of AI tools’ output.
The mission of Trading Paints is to unleash the creativity and personality of sim racers everywhere — no matter if you’re a new creator or a painter who’s a fixture on the Trending page — and continuing to keep photos accurate and true to their iRacing form will keep the Trading Paints community colorful and thriving.
